Black Swan arrives in Chiang Mai today!

Chiang Mai movies update Friday, February 25, 2011

by Thomas Ohlson

Black Swan flies into Chiang Mai today, at Major Cineplex, Airport Plaza, for two performances scheduled for today, at:

12:00 noon; and 19:20.

Times will be different tomorrow and Sunday, so check.

It’s being shown with digital image and sound, in the cinema usually reserved for 3D films, Cinema 5. What did I say yesterday in my newssheet? Right! I said, “may pop up here any time, not necessarily on a Thursday.”

Black Swan: US, Drama/ Romance/ Thriller – 1 hr 48 mins – Follows the story of Nina (Natalie Portman), a ballerina in a New York City ballet company whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance. She lives with her obsessive former ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey) who exerts a suffocating control over her. When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) for the opening production of their new season, Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. Directed by Darren Aronofsky.  Nominated for best picture of the year, best direction, best actress (Natalie Portman), best cinematography (Matthew Libatique), and editing. Rated R in the US for strong sexual content, disturbing violent images, language, and some drug use. Generally favorable reviews: 79/82 out of 100.

Vincent Cassel has compared his character in the film to George Balanchine, who co-founded New York City Ballet. The actor said Balanchine was "a control freak, a true artist using sexuality to direct his dancers".

The Hollywood Reporter: Kirk Honeycutt: First there was the Phantom of the Opera. Now, in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan, you get the Terror of the Ballet. The movie combines horror-movie tropes with The Red Shoes, All About Eve, and every movie about show business that insists you don't have to be crazy to become a star but it doesn't hurt either. The movie is so damn out-there in every way that you can't help admiring Aronofsky for daring to be so very, very absurd.

Swan is an instant guilty pleasure.

CinemaBlend.com, Katey Rich: Audaciously weird and scary and go-nuts psychotic, Black Swan is, by any measure, a tour de force.

Thank you Thunwa for this comment and all your other comments. I certainly agree that Black Swan deserves to be seen and heard in a theater with digital sound, as they have at Airport Plaza. I saw it again today (it's the last day for it) and it is really a superb example of filmmaking. I see more in the film each time.

I just found out that Black Swan has been reprieved, but for how long no one knows. But it is playing Thursday at 9:20 pm, and possibly Friday as well. Airport Plaza in their digital cinema, Cinema 5. It's truly a fantastic film.
