July Update

I’m still on vacation.

Chiang Mai movies – Update, and EU Film Festival Listings

by Thomas Ohlson

Sunday, July 24, 2011

Yes, Chiang Mai still has movies! But as you’ve undoubtedly noticed they’re coming and going without my comments to help you decide which you might want to see. At least for the time being, I’m afraid. I’m simply not up to going through the effort each week of getting the newsletter and this blog out. I did it for over five years straight, and it is an effort. Particularly since I’m such a perfectionist, and every little error or typographical inconsistency caused me untold tension and turmoil! (I do hate making mistakes!)

But, there is a glimmer of hope! It may happen that the newsletter will be taken over by someone else, and continue, but perhaps not as often. Stay tuned for more information.

In the meantime, please be aware that I still am writing weekly film reviews for the Chiang Mai Mail and the Pattaya Mail, at least for awhile. Both can be found online – and actually the Chiang Mai Mail is only on line at present. Look for Mark Gernpy. If these links don’t take you exactly where you want to go, go to the newspapers main page and navigate from there to the movie reviews.

I think I really wore down my health doing this stuff, and at present I’m really not all that well. My body seems to be feeling the results of the quadruple bypass quite seriously, and I’m really full of aches and pains, and lack energy, and I get dizzy often. The operation seems to have suddenly made me fifteen years older.

Nevertheless, I did finally manage to get some information together on this year’s European Union Film Festival, though a little late. Following below are some comments on the films showing today (Sunday, July 24) and tomorrow (Monday, July 25). Hopefully, I will manage to continue with more comments every second day for the remainder of the festival.

Thanks to those of you who wrote expressing concern; I appreciate your thoughts.

I think you did a fantastic job before and your blogs are sorely missed, but I can understand you being worn down by it. You were doing all the work and Film Space and Alliance Francaise and other groups weren't even bothering to post their own notices. Seems like a better way to go about this would be to rethink the approach so it's less "hands on". Get others to post more and act as more of a moderator. Find others that can manage the blog instead of just you. Take turns or do it by committee. Things like that that would make the effort less onerous.
